In this cogent study, first published in , Stuart Prall offers a well-balanced account of the Revolution, its roots, and its consequences. The events of , Prall argues, cannot be viewed in isolation. This is an admirable combination of analysis, commentary upon views of historians, and chronological narrative, starting with the Restoration in and continuing through the Act of Settlement in If you want to examine a book for possible course use, please see our Course Books page.November LC: DA pp. He escaped back to England after a Crusoe-esque adventure in which he had been marooned on a desert island with his own Man Friday, a Carib Indian, before he was rescued and eventually taken home by a privateer ship in need of his medical skills. With domestic rebellion being so easily crushed, this catastrophe could only be averted by the intervention of a foreign Protestant power, the Netherlands.James had exploited public fears concerning national security in the aftermath of the Monmouth rebellion to strengthen his permanent army. Although estimates vary, the number of troops the Prince brought over may have been as many as 21, The Irish Fright as it came to be known, spread rapidly across the country. Rumours of Irish risings broke out in Norfolk on the 13th and 14th of the month, and in Surrey on the 14th and 15th. By 15 December the news had reached Yorkshire. The antiquary Ralph Thoresby reported that in Leeds there were reports that nearby Beeston was burning, leading to a flight from the city.Violence, both real and imagined, was then an integral part of the Revolution of —9. Between and the Glorious Revolution the casualties of the dynastic struggle in England alone numbered in the thousands. In Scotland and Ireland the human costs were even higher. Moreover, the exclusively Protestant nature of the revolution settlement in Ireland would ensure that the bloody shockwaves of —9 would be felt right up to the present day. In Ireland and Scotland, the Revolution was militarily contested and its settlements politically and religiously divisive. This was a reflection of the low priority given to Scottish and Irish affairs by both James and William: rich, populous England was the main prize in the struggle. For William, Jacobite rebellion, a dangerous distraction from the continental war with Louis XIV, had to be rapidly suppressed. Irish Protestants disregarded the generous peace terms of the Treaty of Limerick and established a monopoly over land ownership and political power. In Scotland, Jacobite victory at Killiecrankie on 27 July was followed by a succession of military defeats, until peace was agreed at Achallader in June James was a devout Catholic, but he did not wish to see Catholicism restored by force, seeking instead to gain for his co-religionists the same rights enjoyed by members of the Church of England. However, the questionable legality of his actions and his authoritarian style convinced many he wished to destroy Protestantism. William, the Dutch Stadtholder since , was an astute politician and experienced general. His greatest preoccupation was the military struggle with Louis XIV. King James II took the throne in England in , during a time when relations between Catholics and Protestants were tense. There was also considerable friction between the monarchy and the British Parliament. James, who was Catholic, supported the freedom of worship for Catholics and appointed Catholic officers to the army. He also had close ties with France—a relationship that concerned many of the English people. In , King James II issued a Declaration of Indulgence, which suspended penal laws against Catholics and granted acceptance of some Protestant dissenters. Later that year, the king formally dissolved his Parliament and attempted to create a new Parliament that would support him unconditionally. The Whigs, the main group that opposed Catholic succession, were especially outraged. William was already in the process of taking military action against England, and the letter served as an additional propaganda motive.William of Orange assembled an impressive armada for the invasion and landed in Torbay, Devon, in November King James, however, had prepared for military attacks and left London to bring his forces to meet the invading army. James decided to retreat back to London on November In December , King James made an attempt to escape but was captured.Later that month, he made another attempt and successfully fled to France, where his Catholic cousin Louis XIV held the throne and where James eventually died in exile in In January , the now-famous Convention Parliament met. The two new rulers accepted more restrictions from Parliament than any previous monarchs, causing an unprecedented shift in the distribution of power throughout the British realm. The king and queen both signed the Declaration of Rights, which became known as the Bill of Rights. This document acknowledged several constitutional principles, including the right for regular Parliaments, free elections and freedom of speech in Parliament.Additionally, it forbade the monarchy from being Catholic. While there was little bloodshed and violence in England, the revolution led to significant loss of life in Ireland and Scotland.
