What do klingons call themselves
The book, titled "The Klingon Dictionary," was first published in The first part explains the grammar, and the second part is a Klingon-English bilingual dictionary. I decided to not make up any words having anything to do with Klingon geography or Klingon culture. I know it sounds strange to have a dictionary about Klingon that doesn't deal with that aspect, but the reason is that I'm not a writer, I don't write the stories or the movies and I didn't want to make something up that down the road would turn out wrong because of a TV episode or a movie.
So I would let writers make up the culture, and come back afterward to say 'This is how you call it. Klingon Language Institute. Although the book has sold over , copies since publication, it didn't immediately create a following of Klingon language learners.
That started brewing, Okrand said, in the mids. He offered to meet and told me they were a group of people who got together for activities centered around learning the language, and they had a yearly convention.
I didn't know this was going on," he said. Klingon fans in costumes at the San Diego Comic-Con in Today, the Klingon Language Institute has about 5, guest or free members and about full or paid members, and their 25th annual gathering -- aka qep'a' cha'maH vaghDIch -- took place in Indianapolis in July What happens at the gatherings? Some go out to places like museums or galleries and speak Klingon, others go to restaurants, while others just have gatherings at home. At our main gathering qep'a' we also hold classes for beginners, and panels for more experienced speakers.
Not everyone who attends the meetings is an expert speaker. Both Okrand and Lispcombe estimate that about 20 or so people in the world have a high enough level of proficiency to hold a conversation purely in Klingon. But many more get by. The advanced grammar is more complex, but I still think it's less complex than other languages.
Klingon is more tricky than difficult, as it does some things that natural languages don't tend to do. One problem is that small talk doesn't come easy in Klingon, as many popular English words intentionally don't have a direct translation.
There is no "Hello," for example, and the nearest equivalent is "nuqneH," which means "What do you want? Lieutenant Worf contends that love poetry and the great novel both reached their height with the Klingons.
T'kar and Yeto were two more Klingons who had no respect for the Klingon Empire's current state of affairs. Kang fretted that the warrior ethic was lost among modern Klingons who would open restaurants and such. Science Officer Dax said that getting Kang angry at Curzon was the only way to begin to create a bond between the two — a Klingon truism, Kang agreed.
The custom of naming godparents or other relatives is practiced among Klingons as well as humans. The Jem'Hadar , Third Talak'talan, expressed regret that his first experience with an Alpha Quadrant being was not with a Klingon warrior, but with Federation humans and a Ferengi instead, both of whom he considered weak.
Despite the disillusionment and disrespect of some Klingons, Klingon honor still counts among the peoples. D'Ghor was not allowed to claim the House of Kozak based on financial debts alone, and he was stopped and shamed while attacking the unarmed Quark before the High Council. Grilka and Gowron alike sneered at financial matters and normally considered them beneath a warrior's time and attention, charging D'Ghor with using "money to bring down a great house".
Even so, Quark was able to resurrect a plenitude of complex financial records. Challenges to personal honor are settled usually by personal combat, but Quark used numbers. Klingon females — banned from holding Council seats — are not even allowed to head their heirless dead husband's house, except in special cases.
The Klingons must have some class system, as personal servants are used, usually among what appear to be the poor. Due to their rough nature, especially when drunk, Quark charged Klingons double for holosuite use, and then raised it to triple normal cost.
The Klingons' profound hatred of Romulans continues. Although they believe in an afterlife, Klingons perform no burial ritual and dispose of the corpse by the most efficient means possible — although some archeological digs on Qo'noS revealed different customs at one time. Long ago, as the crew of the Enterprise explored the final frontier, one man boldly did what few—if any—actors had ever done before: construct a language from scratch. But while James Doohan Scotty may have invented a form of Klingon on the set of Star Trek: The Motion Picture , the real credit for its enduring legacy goes to linguist Marc Okrand, who started developing Klingon for Trek films in , bringing constructed languages "conlangs" to generations of new enthusiasts, from Trekkers to Dune fans to Na'vi admirers.
People constructed languages before Klingon: J. Hildegard of Bingen fashioned the Lingua Ignota in , crediting some angels for divine inspiration. But as part of a TV show beloved by millions of viewers, Okrand's Klingon brought conlangs to the popular lexicon. Much of Klingon's appeal comes from its lexical novelty.
As the first constructed language widely portrayed on-screen, Klingon faced an additional hurdle: unlike the Elvish dialects in the Lord of the Rings novels, characters had to actually speak it.
