With another F down, some may wonder how many of these stealth fighters are still available. So far, four F Raptors have been lost to crashes. The latest was a training unit -- from the 43rd Fighter Squadron part of the th Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida — that crashed 12 miles northeast of the base.
Aside from these fighters, the USAF had around 18 airframes in back-up, all of which were considered extras. Of these, 13 F Raptors were combat-coded, three were training jets while the remaining were test planes.
One of the 18 back-up F Raptors is expected to replace the downed bird in Eglin. This means the USAF can only afford to lose 17 planes before its flyable strength drops. Fs flying overhead almost collided in midair with Fs that were acting as the on-scene commanders — a near miss that the supervisor said should be a learning opportunity for future emergency response coordination in the area.
The pilot was not fatigued, stressed or intoxicated at the time of the accident. Investigators also spoke with F manufacturer Lockheed Martin and other companies that work on the jet, though their input was not made public.
A spokesperson for Air Combat Command did not answer whether other Raptors could be affected by the same issue, or whether the investigations have led to further inspections or repairs. The wing has struggled with staffing and morale in the years since the hurricane as airmen feel stuck in limbo between Tyndall and a potential move to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. Nearly half of the nine major F mishaps in fiscal occurred at the th Fighter Wing, including the May incident.

The US stopped building the F in because the need for advanced dogfighters seemed less pressing.
