Why mound potatoes

You can also use a quality, organic potting soil. The vermiculite has water absorbing properties which helps keep the soil from drying out quickly.

Continue adding the soil around each plant until the raised bed is filled and just the top leaves are sticking above the new soil. Cover the potato plants with soil, except for the very top leaves. Water the raised bed well, making sure the new soil is soaked thoroughly. Continue to keep the potato plants well watered for the next couple weeks. After a couple weeks the potatoes should be ready to hill again. The potato plants typically grow fairly quickly, so keep an eye on them.

After a couple weeks, the potato plants should grow another eight to twelve inches tall. At this time they are ready to be hilled again. For the second hilling I use straw around the potato plants.

Using straw makes it much easier to harvest the potatoes when the time comes. The trick to hilling potatoes with straw is to lay the straw down very thick.

Most root vegetables, from carrots and parsnips to turnips and radishes, grow vertically downward. This has two important benefits. Secondly, as the tubers develop, they usually rise up through the dirt to get exposure to sunshine.

This turns them green and promotes production of a toxic alkaloid, solanine, which — as Cornell University cautions — can be toxic if eaten in quantity. Hilling, then, gives you better yields from increased production and decreased waste fewer green potatoes to discard. You can start hilling your potatoes once the new plants have reached a height of 8 to 12 inches. You may find it safer to bring soil from elsewhere in your garden.

If possible, look for white tiers with a chocolate brown embroidered border or braid trim to go with the upholstery.

Leave the tops of the windows uncovered to maximize the natural light. Next, I would get a mirror that matches the round mirror on the right OR get two large, inexpensive matching square or rectangular mirrors to flank the windows. I would suggest putting a chair and a small table and lamp across each corner in this end of the room.

I would move the sofa down and flank it with a small table and lamp on each end. A small green, leafy plant on each end table will bring color, life, and air into the room too. I would suggest putting a pastel throw and throw pillows on each chair and sofa. Since your floor is a terra cotta color, I would suggest peach for the pillows and throws.

Next, I would invest in an ivory and leaf green print area rug for the center of the room. The terra cotta floors are pretty, but a light-colored area rug will bring in brightness. Also, you can roll up the rug and store it to keep it clean between showings of your house. I also would invest in white-painted crown molding. I would suggest keeping the walls ivory or a pale beige and then painting the actual ceiling snow white for contrast.

You might be able to find lamp shades in peach or shell pink to add warmth to the room and contrast from the light beige walls. I laughed at all your posts. Who knew having clean pets and kids would be so controversial. My pets and kids are all over the house. I have never bathed either one in the kitchen sink but have washed sons hair in the kitchen and occasionally my own. Dogs are bathed in the tub or in warm weather outside with the hose.

I would like to weigh in on the germ issue. I have to renew my health and safety certificate every year for my work. We were told that the germs were not getting stronger, we are getting weaker with too much sanitizing. No need for anti anything. Soap and water does the trick. Living with animals makes a child's immune system stronger and they have less allergies than children who have lived a germ free life.

Relax, enjoy, clean your sinks daily and all will be well. Our Christmas day springs to life right out of the movies. I do not ever think I have seen it all the way through, lol. Since my husband has worked the last several Christmases we took our cue from the movie. We either eat out or get take home Chinese Food.

Fra rah rah. After reading our fortune cookies we scratch lottery tickets by the Leg lamp light; The night winds up on a sweet note with my homemade best ever childhood memory Christmas cookies. I use to launch the tree out the door at midnight but as I got older it just doesn't seem like a rush to do anymore.
